Reigate and Banstead

Local authority district in Surrey, England

Coordinates:51.25, -0.2
OS grid ref:TQ 25 51

Reigate and Banstead is a borough in Surrey, England, made up of a cluster of towns and villages including Reigate, Banstead, Redhill and Horley. It sits on the edge of London’s commuter belt and combines suburban neighbourhoods with market-town charm, Victorian terraces and pockets of modern retail and business parks.

The district is notable for its geography: the chalk escarpment of the North Downs (part of the Surrey Hills AONB) provides dramatic views, chalk grassland and popular walking routes, while Reigate’s mediaeval castle earthworks and the historic Reigate Priory add visible layers of history. Banstead Downs and other green spaces preserve a more rural feel in parts of the borough.

Economically it combines a strong commuter economy with local retail, light industry and professional services, and benefits from close links to central London and nearby Gatwick Airport. Culturally there are active local arts and community scenes - for example the Harlequin theatre and independent shops in the town centres - and the area is generally seen as offering a high quality of life with good schools and leisure amenities.
