Runnymede

Local authority district in Surrey, England

Coordinates:51.39, -0.54
OS grid ref:TQ 01 67

Runnymede is a borough in Surrey, on the north‑west edge of the county. It contains a cluster of towns and villages including Addlestone, Chertsey, Egham and Englefield Green, with the borough council based in Addlestone.

The district is best known for its riverside open spaces on the banks of the River Thames, notably the meadow where the sealing of Magna Carta is commemorated; a range of memorials and monuments such as the John F. Kennedy Memorial and the Air Forces Memorial make it a focus for visitors and remembrance. Much of that land is kept as public green space, giving the area a parkland feel despite its proximity to urban centres.

Economically and socially it functions largely as an affluent London commuter belt with good road and rail connections and closeness to Heathrow, while also supporting local industry, office parks and tourist attractions. The presence of Royal Holloway, University of London at Englefield Green brings a student and cultural dimension, and family attractions such as Thorpe Park add to its year‑round visitor appeal.
