Penton Hook is a pronounced horseshoe bend on the River Thames within the Runnymede borough of Surrey, England. A man-made navigation cut and the early 19th-century lock and weir complex - including Penton Hook Lock - created Penton Hook Island, shortening the river and leaving a broad floodplain of meadows and woodlands favoured by birds and anglers.
Close to the historic Runnymede meadows, the area is popular with boaters, walkers and local communities for informal recreation, and the riverside economy is largely leisure- and tourism-orientated rather than industrial. The bend and its navigation works are a visible reminder of the Thames’s long role in transport and local life, providing quiet paths, moorings and seasonally changing wetlands and grazing land.
