Woking is a compact local authority district in Surrey, England, centred on the large commuter town of the same name about 20–25 miles south‑west of London. The borough mixes suburban neighbourhoods and greenbelt countryside, with commons and heathland such as Horsell Common and the River Wey corridor, and includes other communities like Knaphill, Byfleet, Pyrford and Goldsworth Park.

Woking’s growth accelerated in the 19th century with the arrival of the railway and today it combines a strong local economy - including advanced engineering and motorsport links through McLaren - with cultural features such as the modern Lightbox gallery and the historic Shah Jahan Mosque, Britain’s first purpose‑built mosque. The borough is also famous in fiction for its role in H. G. Wells’s The War of the Worlds, and retains a diverse population and lively commuter connections into London Waterloo.
