Tameside sits in the eastern part of Greater Manchester, straddling the valley of the River Tame and the western fringes of the Pennines. It includes towns such as Ashton-under-Lyne, Stalybridge, Hyde, Mossley, Denton and Dukinfield, and the landscape is a mix of industrial terraces, canals, reservoirs and upland valleys.
Historically it was a hub of the Industrial Revolution, with cotton mills, coal and canal networks shaping much of the local architecture; many former mills and warehouses have since been converted for housing, workplaces and cultural uses. The contemporary economy blends light manufacturing, retail and public services, while a significant number of people commute into Manchester and other regional centres.
Culturally Tameside has a strong local identity, with museums such as Portland Basin celebrating the industrial past and a busy calendar of markets, community events and amateur sports and music clubs. Plenty of green space - valley walks, reservoirs and canalside trails - means it’s also popular for outdoor recreation as well as everyday suburban life.
