Ossett is a market town and electoral ward in the metropolitan borough of Wakefield, situated on a plateau between the Calder and Dearne valleys in West Yorkshire. Its position close to Wakefield and within easy reach of Leeds gives the area a semi‑rural feel while remaining well connected to larger urban centres.
Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Ossett grew up around woollen mills and coal mining in the 19th century, and you can still see Victorian mill buildings, terraces and a small conservation area in the town centre. Today it is largely residential with local shops, light industry and a strong community life - sports clubs, volunteer groups and occasional local events - reflecting its industrial roots alongside a commuter‑town role.
