Hungerford is a compact market town and civil parish in West Berkshire, England, set where the River Kennet meets the Kennet and Avon Canal. Its narrow high street and mix of medieval and Georgian buildings give a pleasant, slightly sleepy centre, with towpath walks, small independent shops and a long tradition of markets that reflect its rural hinterland and proximity to the Wiltshire border and the M4 corridor.
Historically a cloth and coaching town, it now supports a mixed local economy of agriculture, small businesses and equestrian activity in the surrounding downs, while many residents commute to larger centres such as Newbury. The community is active in local events and conservation of the canal-side environment; the town also carries the memory of the tragic 1987 shootings, an event that had a lasting social and legislative impact and which the town remembers as part of its recent history.
