Petworth is a small historic market town in the district of Chichester, West Sussex, England, known for its long high street of 17th- and 18th-century buildings, independent shops, antiques dealers and a lively community atmosphere. The town retains a strong market-town feel with regular markets and events, and punches above its size culturally with galleries, cafés and the annual Petworth Festival of music and arts.
The town is dominated by Petworth House and its great Capability Brown parkland, overseen by the National Trust and famed for its herds of grazing deer and an important art collection including works by Turner. Tourism, local agriculture and specialist retail (especially antiques and arts) are central to the local economy, and its location close to the rolling downland of the South Downs National Park makes it a popular base for walkers and visitors exploring the Sussex countryside.
