The small seaside town of Selsey sits on the southern tip of the Manhood Peninsula, within the district of Chichester in West Sussex, England, projecting into the English Channel at Selsey Bill. Its low-lying shingle beaches, sandbanks and the dramatic spit at East Head give the place a distinctive, windswept character and a long history of shipwrecks and smuggling; it was even the seat of a Saxon bishopric until the see was moved to Chichester after the Norman reforms.
Today Selsey combines a working fishing fleet and shellfish trade with seaside tourism, a significant retired population and lively local traditions such as the regatta and lifeboat heritage. Nature reserves nearby, notably Pagham Harbour, attract birdwatchers and walkers, while the exposed coastline and strong tides make it popular for sailing and beachcombing rather than sunbathing.
