West Thorney is a small village on Thorney Island, situated in the district of Chichester in West Sussex, England. It occupies the western edge of Chichester Harbour, part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is reached by a single causeway road that gives it a slightly secluded, island feel.
The settlement’s character is shaped by a long military connection - the nearby RAF Thorney Island airfield and ongoing Ministry of Defence activity - alongside small-scale farming and a strong maritime leisure scene. The surrounding saltmarshes and mudflats are important for wintering and migratory birds, so the area is popular with sailors and birdwatchers and retains a small, close-knit community with limited local services.
