High Furness is a largely upland ward in the unitary authority of Westmorland and Furness, covering the moorland and craggy slopes of the Furness Fells within the southern reaches of the Lake District National Park. The ward is centred on the valley around Coniston and Coniston Water, with dramatic ridgelines and walkers’ routes leading up the well‑known summit of the Coniston Old Man.
Its history is a mix of small‑scale copper and slate mining, traditional hill farming and Victorian cultural connections - most famously the writer and thinker whose home at Brantwood overlooks the lake. Today the local economy leans on tourism and outdoor pursuits alongside farming, and the ward remains sparsely populated with tight‑knit communities, seasonal pressures and a strong sense of place rooted in landscape and heritage.
