Ulpha sits high in rural Cumberland, tucked into the upper reaches of the Duddon Valley and straddling the wooded banks of the River Duddon within the Lake District. It is sparsely populated and notably remote, with steep fells, ancient woodland and quiet single‑track lanes that give sweeping views across the valley and a strong sense of landscape conservation.
Historically the area has Norse and farming roots, and its character is one of traditional stone farmsteads, drystone walls and sheep pasture; tourism now supplements the local economy through cottages and walkers exploring the quieter corners of the national park. The valley’s scenery inspired William Wordsworth’s poems about the Duddon, and today Ulpha remains a small, close‑knit community prized for tranquillity rather than services.
