Windermere lies on the eastern shore of Lake Windermere within the Lake District National Park in Westmorland and Furness, England. The parish encompasses the towns often thought of together with Bowness-on-Windermere and grew rapidly as a Victorian resort after the arrival of the railway in the 19th century; visitors still head up nearby viewpoints such as Orrest Head for classic lake-and-fell panoramas.
Today the local economy is largely driven by tourism - boat cruises, watersports, cafés, galleries and hospitality - alongside a year‑round community of residents and seasonal visitors. Architecturally there are Victorian hotels and promenades, social life mixes outdoor pursuits with village events, and the area remains a popular gateway for fell‑walking and family holidays, with the familiar tensions of second‑home ownership and rising property values seen across the national park.
