Wingates is a small locality in Westhoughton within the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, in Greater Manchester and historically part of Lancashire. It lies close to the A6 and the M61, making it a short commuter hop to Bolton town centre and Manchester, while retaining some semi-rural edges and pockets of green space.
Like much of the area, Wingates has roots in coal mining and the textile trades, and today the local community revolves around small shops, pubs and businesses. It retains a village-like feel despite nearby urban growth, and enjoys a strong cultural identity - most notably a long-standing local brass band that has brought wider recognition to the neighbourhood in England.
