Calne is a historic market town and civil parish in Wiltshire, England, lying along the valley of the River Marden amid gently rolling chalk downland on the edge of Salisbury Plain. The town has a long history as a local centre - from medieval markets and cloth-working to a later reputation for pork‑curing - and retains a number of Georgian buildings and heritage sites, most notably the nearby Bowood House estate which contributes to the area’s character.
Today Calne combines that historic feel with a modern, community‑oriented life: independent shops, local events and easy access to countryside walking and cycling. It also functions as a local hub and commuter base with straightforward connections to nearby towns such as Chippenham and Devizes, while still offering a distinct small‑town social scene.
