Old Sarum sits on a low chalk hill just north of Salisbury in Wiltshire, England, and is striking for its concentric earthworks and panoramic views over the Salisbury Plain and the valley of the River Avon. The site has continuous occupation from an Iron Age hillfort through Roman and Saxon phases to a Norman motte-and-bailey and a royal castle, so you can still see the outline of ramparts, the motte and the ruined stone foundations of an early cathedral.
Historically the old hill-top city was largely abandoned when the cathedral was re-sited to what became modern Salisbury, and later the site even became notorious as a parliamentary "rotten borough" until reforms in the 19th century. Today Old Sarum is a scheduled monument and a popular short visit for walkers, school groups and anyone interested in archaeology, with few economic activities beyond heritage tourism and events on the grassland.
