The neighbouring villages of Winterbourne Dauntsey and Winterbourne Earls sit in the upper Bourne valley of Wiltshire, a few miles north of Salisbury. They take their name from the seasonal chalk stream of the River Bourne, and the landscape of chalk downland, watermeadows and hedgerows is still prominent; settlement here has medieval roots and the hamlets contain a number of listed buildings and remnants of old mills and manorial holdings.
Historically centred on agriculture and market gardening, the villages are now largely residential with some farming, equestrian activity and small local businesses, and many residents commute to Salisbury and further afield. Community life revolves around the churches and village halls, and there’s a strong local interest in conserving the chalk-stream ecology and the rural character that gives the two Winterbournes their picturesque, historic feel.
