Royal Wootton Bassett is a compact market town in Wiltshire, England, sitting on the old coaching route west of Swindon and at the edge of the rolling countryside that leads towards the Cotswolds. Its high street is lined with attractive Georgian and Victorian buildings, a regular market and independent shops, and the town’s name reflects its Saxon origins ("Wootton" meaning farm by the wood) with the medieval Bassett family adding the surname.
The town came to national attention for the dignified public repatriation gatherings for service personnel returning to nearby RAF Lyneham, a role that led to the monarch granting it the "Royal" prefix in 2011. Today it functions partly as a commuter town for larger centres such as Swindon, Bristol and Bath, while retaining a strong sense of community and local civic pride.
