Nether Poppleton is a riverside village a few miles north‑west of York, lying on the gravel terraces by the River Ouse. Its setting on the floodplain and on pebbly soils helps explain the old name and the village’s historic layout, and modern flood defences plus good road and rail links have made it a popular commuter spot for the city while keeping the riverside character.
Despite twentieth‑ and twenty‑first‑century housing and small business developments, the place retains a strong village feel with a village green, a local pub, a primary school and sports clubs, and the little medieval St Everilda's Church as an attractive focal point; community events and conservation-minded residents help balance growth with historic and social continuity.
