Wheldrake is a small village and civil parish in the City of York, lying about seven miles to the south‑east of the city centre. It sits close to the floodplain of the River Derwent and the seasonal wetlands of Wheldrake Ings, which are valued locally for birdwatching, walking and simple riverside scenery.
The village has clear medieval roots and a traditional parish church, St Helen's Church, and was once served by the rural Derwent Valley Light Railway. Today it’s largely a mix of farming and commuter households with an active village life centred on the school, hall, pubs and local clubs, so it retains a strong community feel while being within easy reach of York.
