Mid Ulster

District council area in Northern Ireland

Coordinates:54.64, -6.9

The Mid Ulster district lies in the heart of Northern Ireland, spanning parts of County Tyrone, County Londonderry and County Armagh. The landscape is a mix of rolling farmland and peatlands, with the western foothills of the Sperrin Mountains and shoreline close to Lough Neagh, while the principal towns include Dungannon, Cookstown and Magherafelt.

Historically the area is rich, with links to Gaelic chieftains such as the O’Neills and the later Plantation of Ulster, so archaeological remains and historic buildings are scattered through both towns and countryside. Community life is strong, centred on Gaelic games, traditional music, choirs, agricultural shows and a calendar of local festivals that reflect rural and urban identities.

Economically Mid Ulster is a mix of agriculture, food processing, engineering and manufacturing alongside retail and services, with a tradition of linen and textile manufacture in the past. The district has seen ongoing regeneration and cross‑community projects since the Troubles, and benefits from road and rail links towards Belfast and Derry, supporting commuting and visitor flows.
