Stonehaven is a compact harbour town on the northeast coast of Aberdeenshire, prized for its dramatic cliff-top ruins at Dunnottar Castle, a working harbour, and a lively old-town strip of independent shops and seafood cafés. It retains a strong fishing and maritime heritage and draws visitors for its coastal walks, sandy bay and the atmospheric New Year “fireballs” procession that remains a distinctive local tradition.
Lower Deeside describes the river corridor and scattered villages along the River Dee as it approaches Aberdeen, combining fertile farmland, granite-built villages and affluent commuter suburbs. The area is popular for riverside walking and salmon fishing, has links to Victorian country-house and royal Deeside history upstream, and its economy balances agriculture, tourism and commuters working in the city and North Sea energy sector.
