Culloden sits a few miles east of Inverness in the Highland area of Scotland, known primarily for the flat, haunting sweep of Culloden Moor where the Culloden Battlefield marks the 1746 defeat of the Jacobite forces. The battlefield and its visitor centre sit amid peat and heathland, close to ancient sites such as the Clava Cairns, and the landscape’s mix of archaeology and raw natural terrain gives the place a strong sense of history and atmosphere.
Historically the battle led to harsh reprisals and policies that reshaped Highland society and culture, and today the site is both a place of remembrance and a draw for visitors; tourism, small-scale farming and commuting to nearby Inverness underpin the local economy. Despite the solemn associations, the area is also a focus for learning about Gaelic heritage and the wider social changes that followed the 18th century conflicts.
