Uibhist a Tuath sits in Na h-Eileanan Siar as one of the machair-rich islands of the Outer Hebrides, a low-lying landscape of sandy machair, countless freshwater lochs and a jagged coastline that supports important birdlife and wildflower meadows. Causeways link it to neighbouring islands such as Benbecula and Berneray, and the mix of sea and inland waters makes it notable for fishing, birdwatching and traditional peat-cutting.
Life on Uibhist a Tuath remains rooted in crofting, small-scale fisheries and seasonal tourism, with a resilient, largely Gaelic-speaking community and strong cultural traditions in music and crafts. The island bears traces of long human occupation - from prehistoric remains to Norse place-names - and like much of the Hebrides its history has been shaped by crofting, the Clearances and emigration, giving a distinctive blend of heritage and contemporary island life.
