Map of the UK

Eilean Leathann sits off the shores of Na h-Eileanan Siar in the Outer Hebrides, its Gaelic name literally meaning "broad island". Like many of the smaller Hebridean isles it is dominated by ancient Lewisian gneiss, a rugged rocky coastline and maritime vegetation, and it provides important habitat for breeding seabirds and resting seals that draw nature-watchers and boat visitors.

Although largely uninhabited today, Eilean Leathann shares in the crofting and seafaring history of the archipelago - historically used for grazing and gathering seaweed and rough grass - and remains part of the living Gaelic landscape. Its value is now often cultural and ecological rather than economic, contributing to local identity, outdoor recreation and conservation interest in the wider islands.
