Bonnyrigg is a former mining town in south-eastern Midlothian, Scotland, sitting amid the rolling farmland and wooded river valleys that characterise the county. It lies within easy reach of Edinburgh, making it part of the city’s commuter belt, but still retains visible traces of its 19th‑ and early 20th‑century coal and shale‑oil industries in its street patterns and older buildings.
Today the town combines suburban housing and modern retail with a lively local community: there are active sports clubs, notably the non‑league football side Bonnyrigg Rose, and nearby heritage attractions such as the National Mining Museum at Newtongrange that celebrate the area’s industrial past. Economically the town is mixed - many residents commute into Edinburgh or work in local services and light industry - while ongoing housing and amenity developments reflect its role as a growing Midlothian centre.
