Penicuik is a former mill town in Midlothian, Scotland, set in the valley of the River North Esk about nine miles south of Edinburgh. The town is backed by rolling countryside and wooded glens, with the dramatic ruin and estate of Penicuik House and the walks of Roslin Glen nearby, so it’s popular with walkers and people seeking quick access to the countryside while still being close to the city.
Historically Penicuik grew up around paper-making and other mills and retains pieces of that industrial heritage even though the economy is now more mixed, with local shops, light industry and many residents commuting to Edinburgh. Community life is lively for a town its size, with local clubs, a small museum and seasonal events that reflect its rural-urban mix and historic roots.
