Mayfield is a small village in Midlothian, just to the south‑east of Edinburgh and close to Dalkeith. It expanded in the 19th century alongside the coal industry and the local rail links, so much of its character reflects that industrial past even as housing and streets have evolved into a more suburban pattern.
Today Mayfield functions largely as a residential and commuter community with local shops, a primary school and active community groups, while good access to nearby countryside and Dalkeith Country Park gives residents easy opportunities for outdoor recreation. There’s a strong local identity rooted in its mining heritage alongside more recent suburban development.
