Blaina sits in the steep-sided valley of the Ebbw Fach in Blaenau Gwent, south-east Wales. Its compact, Victorian streets and terraces reflect rapid 19th-century growth driven by nearby ironworks and coal mines, and the town still shows visible traces of that industrial past in its housing pattern and landscape.
Since the pits closed, the area has faced economic challenges but retains a strong local identity and community spirit, with grassroots projects, local clubs and outdoor pursuits taking advantage of the surrounding hills. It also serves as a commuter base for nearby centres such as Newport and Cardiff, while offering easy access to upland walking towards the Brecon Beacons.
