Brynmawr is a market town in the county borough of Blaenau Gwent in south Wales, sitting on relatively high ground with moorland and hills nearby and sweeping views towards the Brecon Beacons. It occupies a prominent spot at the head of local valleys and sits within easy reach of former industrial centres such as Ebbw Vale, giving the town a semi-rural feel despite its industrial past.
The town grew rapidly in the 19th century with coal and iron industries and still shows that heritage in terraced streets and former works, while the inter‑war "Brynmawr Experiment" - a Quaker‑led social and employment initiative - stands out as an important episode in its social history. Since the decline of heavy industry it has seen waves of regeneration, modest light industry and retail, and a strong community spirit reflected in local organisations and events that keep a sense of place alive.
