Brynmawr is the principal town and electoral ward near the head of the South Wales valleys in Blaenau Gwent, Wales. Its name literally means “big hill” and the town occupies a raised ridge with views over the surrounding valleys, reflecting a landscape shaped by 19th‑ and early 20th‑century coal and iron industries. The built environment still bears traces of that industrial past alongside post‑war housing and a compact town centre.
Like many former mining communities, Brynmawr has experienced post‑industrial change but retains a strong local identity, community groups and independent shops, and benefits from regeneration initiatives and access to nearby countryside and walking routes, including parts of the Brecon Beacons National Park. It sits within a network of valley towns such as Ebbw Vale, so local life mixes practical commuter links with active cultural and heritage interests rooted in its industrial history.
