Merthyr Mawr is a compact, largely rural parish in Bridgend, Wales, best known for its dramatic sand-dune landscape. The adjacent Merthyr Mawr Warren is a nationally important dune system and nature reserve with some of the highest dunes in the country, sitting beside the estuary of the River Ogmore and the Bristol Channel, and punctuated by the atmospheric ruin of Candleston Castle.
The local economy is a mix of agriculture and tourism, with walkers, birdwatchers and beach visitors drawn to the rare habitats and wide skies; conservation is a prominent theme. Socially it remains a small, close-knit community with a strong sense of place, combining historic buildings and grazing land with seasonal holiday accommodation and outdoor recreation opportunities.
