Pencoed is a small town and community in the Bridgend area of Wales, sitting just off the M4 and within easy commuting distance of Cardiff and Swansea. Its Welsh name means "top of the wood", reflecting its origins as a rural settlement; today it has a railway stop on the Maesteg line and good road links that have shaped its role as both a local service centre and a commuter base.
The town grew markedly during the 19th and 20th centuries with the rise of coal and heavy industry in the region, and while those industries have declined it remains economically active with light industry and distribution parks close to the motorway. Social life is lively for a place of its size, with a strong sense of community shown through local sports clubs - notably the rugby club - choirs and annual events, and a streetscape that still includes historic buildings and traditional chapels alongside newer housing estates.
