The ward covers the neighbouring communities of Aberbargoed and Bargoed in Caerphilly, tucked into the eastern end of the South Wales Valleys. Once dominated by coal mining, its industrial past shaped a strong working‑class identity; since the pits closed the area has experienced economic shifts and regeneration efforts alongside enduring social challenges.
A notable local feature is the Aberbargoed Grasslands National Nature Reserve, valued for its rare marshy grassland and butterfly interest, while Bargoed retains active community life around sports clubs and village amenities and benefits from rail links for commuters into Cardiff. Much of the character comes from surviving historic streets, memorials to the mining era and ongoing projects to improve housing, greenspace and local services.
