Briton Ferry sits on the estuary of the River Neath where it meets Swansea Bay, within the county borough of Neath Port Talbot in Wales. The town grew up around a historic ferry crossing and later as an industrial hub; the M4 viaduct known locally as the Briton Ferry Bridge is a prominent landmark spanning the estuary and linking the area to the wider motorway network.
Its 19th- and 20th-century dock, steel and chemical industries shaped a strong working-class identity, and while much heavy industry has declined there has been regeneration alongside pockets of wetlands and walking routes around Baglan Bay. Community life remains lively with local football and rugby clubs, small-scale manufacturing and efforts to balance heritage with new housing and green-space improvements.
