Machen is a small village in the county borough of Caerphilly, in south-east Wales, sitting on the eastern edge of the South Wales Valleys. It occupies a semi-rural spot where rolling farmland and pockets of former industrial landscape meet, and is within easy commuting distance of Cardiff and Newport, making it popular with people who work in the cities but prefer village life.
The village has a strong sense of community and a visible industrial past: coal mining and local quarrying shaped its economy and remain part of the local heritage, while today community life revolves around the village hall, local clubs and pubs, and outdoor pursuits such as walking and cycling on nearby lanes and woodlands. Historic buildings and churches dot the area, and the settlement has quietly evolved into a residential hub with links to the broader social and cultural life of the Valleys.
