Risca is a town in the county borough of Caerphilly in south‑east Wales, sitting in the Ebbw Valley a few miles north‑west of Newport. It expanded rapidly in the 19th century during the Industrial Revolution with coal mining and ironworks, and that industrial heritage is still visible in its terraced streets and local archaeology.
Since the decline of heavy industry the town has largely become a mix of light industry, retail and a commuter base with improved rail links to Newport and beyond to Cardiff; local regeneration projects, parks and community groups now emphasise social life and the area’s heritage, reflecting its history as part of historic Monmouthshire.
