The cluster of villages of Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen lie to the east of Caerphilly in south Wales, occupying lower slopes above the Gwent Levels and within easy reach of Cardiff. The landscape mixes semi‑rural hills and green spaces with pockets of former industrial land, offering pleasant valley views towards the Bristol Channel.
Historically the communities grew up around the South Wales Coalfield, so mining shaped much of the architecture, social life and local institutions; since pit closures the area has seen regeneration, commuting and small‑scale enterprise. There remains a strong local identity, expressed through clubs, churches and sports teams, with Machen keeping a more village character while Bedwas and Trethomas reflect their mining and post‑war housing heritage.
