Ely lies to the west of Cardiff, taking its name from the nearby River Ely. Once a small village and parish, it was transformed in the early-to-mid 20th century into a substantial residential suburb, much of it council-built, and sits a few miles from the city centre with green corridors following the river valley.
Today Ely is known for a strong local community, with neighbourhood shopping parades, community centres, churches, parks and active sports and youth clubs. Many people commute into the city for work while local regeneration and voluntary projects have aimed to improve housing, services and leisure facilities, giving the area a resilient, working-class character and a visible sense of civic pride.
