Cardiff (Caerdydd)

Unitary authority in Wales

Coordinates:51.5, -3.21
OS grid ref:ST 16 78

The unitary authority of Cardiff sits on the southern coast of Wales, where the River Taff meets the Severn Estuary. Much of the waterfront has been transformed since the decline of coal and shipping: Cardiff Bay is now a mixed-use waterfront with contemporary buildings, cultural venues and promenades.

Historically a booming Victorian port that handled South Wales coal, the area still bears reminders of that past alongside civic landmarks. Visitors and residents alike frequent Cardiff Castle, the Principality Stadium for major sporting and music events, and the extensive green lungs of Bute Park close to the city centre.

Today the authority’s economy is driven by public administration, higher education, creative industries and tourism, with institutions such as Cardiff University and broadcasting hubs maintaining a strong presence. It’s socially diverse, with neighbourhoods like Butetown, Roath and Cathays reflecting a mix of long-established communities, students and independent businesses, while ongoing regeneration continues to shape the urban landscape.
