Caerau is a residential parish in the western suburbs of Cardiff, Wales, sitting close to the lower reaches of the River Ely and near the boundary with the Vale of Glamorgan. The neighbourhood grew substantially in the mid‑20th century when council housing was developed on former agricultural land to accommodate workers for South Wales’ industrial economy, and the area still bears traces of that industrial past in its layout and local economy.
Locally there is a strong community identity, with active grassroots sports teams, a primary school and community groups, but the parish has also faced social and economic challenges common to former industrial suburbs. Recent regeneration efforts have focused on improving housing, amenities and opportunities for young people while preserving the area’s close‑knit community feel.
