Pontprennau and Old St. Mellons sit on the north-eastern edge of Cardiff, combining a late‑20th century planned suburb with a small historic village. Pontprennau is characterised by fairly recent housing estates, parkland, lakes and green corridors and benefits from easy access to the M4 and nearby business and retail parks such as Cardiff Gate, so many residents commute into the city or work in local office and retail jobs.
Old St. Mellons retains a village feel with a historic core, conservation area, village green and an old parish church, giving it a very different character to its neighbour; the area has an active community scene and local pubs, and there’s a continued local interest in balancing new development with protecting the village’s heritage. Together the two places offer a mix of commuter suburbia, local services and a lingering sense of rural history on Cardiff’s outskirts.
