The ward centres on the village of Cynwyl Elfed in rural Carmarthenshire, set in rolling agricultural countryside where the Afon Gwili and its tributaries meander through small valleys a short drive north of Carmarthen. It comprises scattered hamlets, farms and lanes popular with walkers and anglers, the kind of West Wales landscape of hedgerows, small woods and river meadows that feels a long way from large towns.
Historically the community grew around the parish church of St Cynwyl and farming has long been the economic backbone, with small-scale tourism, local services and commuting to nearby towns now playing a part. Heritage touches such as the nearby preserved Gwili Railway, plus active local clubs and Welsh-language life, give the area a quietly traditional but community-minded character.
