Whitland is a small market town in Carmarthenshire in west Wales, sitting in a landscape of rolling farmland close to the Pembrokeshire border. Historically it grew as an agricultural centre and as a railway junction serving west Wales, and the town still feels rural and practical, with local shops, light industry and a strong commuting link to larger towns nearby.
Whitland is best known for the ruins of Whitland Abbey, a Cistercian foundation, and for its traditional association with the so‑called "Council of Whitland" and the codification of Welsh law under Hywel Dda - a claim that blends history and local legend. The community remains quite Welsh‑speaking and lively, with local sports clubs, events and a countryside character that reflects its long agricultural and ecclesiastical heritage.
