Ruthin is a compact market town in Denbighshire, Wales, tucked into the Vale of Clwyd where the River Clwyd winds through a backdrop of rolling hills and the nearby Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The town has a clearly medieval core with narrow streets and a mixture of stone buildings, centred around historic landmarks that hint at a long and layered past.
Today Ruthin combines a lively local economy based on agriculture, small independent shops, crafts and tourism with a strong sense of community and a bilingual Welsh–English culture. Visitors are drawn by features such as the ruins and adapted parts of Ruthin Castle, the penal history at Ruthin Gaol and the timber‑framed house Nantclwyd y Dre, while residents enjoy festivals, galleries and easy access to walking country in the surrounding hills.
