St. Asaph is a compact cathedral city in Denbighshire, Wales, set on the low-lying floodplain where the River Clwyd and River Elwy meet. One of the smallest cities in the UK by population, it gained city status in 2012 and is centred on the modest but historic St. Asaph Cathedral, whose origins as an episcopal site go back to the early medieval period and whose fabric largely dates from later medieval and Victorian restorations.
The surrounding landscape of fertile fields and rolling hills gives the place a rural, close-knit feel; the local economy leans on agriculture, small businesses, visitor trade and commuting to nearby centres such as Wrexham and Chester. Cultural life is often anchored on the cathedral with concerts and choral events, and the city serves as a convenient gateway to the wider charms of North Wales.
