Fairbourne is a low-lying coastal village in Gwynedd, Wales, sitting on the southern edge of the Mawddach Estuary opposite Barmouth. It has a long promenade and sandy shore, a small narrow-gauge railway that serves the seafront and is popular with visitors, and wide saltmarshes and estuary mudflats that attract wading birds and lend striking views towards Snowdonia.
Originally developed as a Victorian seaside resort, Fairbourne today relies heavily on tourism and holiday accommodation - caravan parks and holiday homes shape the local economy and seasonal social life. Because much of the village is at or near sea level there have been ongoing debates about long-term flood risk and the future of sea defences, while day-to-day life remains focused on serving residents and visitors in a compact, community-oriented setting.
