Llanberis sits on the northern shore of Llyn Padarn at the foot of Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) in Gwynedd, Wales. It’s a compact village and local ward that punches above its weight as a gateway for walkers and climbers - the Snowdon Mountain Railway starts there and the village is a common base for ascents, the Snowdon Race and other outdoor pursuits; the narrow-gauge Llanberis Lake Railway and the National Slate Museum are popular visitor draws.
Historically the area grew from the slate industry, with the huge quarries at Dinorwig shaping the landscape; the nearby Dinorwig pumped‑storage power station is another striking local landmark. The economy is now heavily geared towards tourism, hospitality and outdoor recreation, while the community retains a strong Welsh‑speaking identity and an active local life centred on sport, heritage and mountain culture.
