Abergele is a small coastal market town in the county borough of Conwy in north Wales, sited by the estuary of the River Clwyd with sandy beaches at Pensarn and dunes that have long made it a modest seaside destination. The town sits close to the A55 trunk road, with larger resorts such as Rhyl and Colwyn Bay within easy reach, and combines commuter links with an agricultural hinterland.
Historically its name comes from the mouth of the small river Gele, and the area has a Victorian railway tragedy in its past - the 1868 Abergele disaster - but these days it is best known for the nearby Gwrych Castle, a 19th‑century estate being restored and recently raised its profile as the location for a television series. Local life mixes tourism, farming and light industry, and there’s an active community scene with sports clubs and events centred on town halls and the castle grounds.
