Penydarren is a largely residential ward on the eastern side of Merthyr Tydfil in south Wales, sitting on the slopes above the valley with views towards the river corridor and the high ground beyond. It lies a short walk from the town centre and the industrial-era transport routes that shaped the area, including the course of the River Taff.
Historically the neighbourhood grew up around the ironworks - notably the Penydarren Ironworks - and is famous as the setting for early steam-engine trials by Richard Trevithick in 1804. Today it has moved from heavy industry to a mixed residential community with local shops, parks and community projects; like much of Merthyr it still carries reminders of its industrial past alongside ongoing efforts to tackle social and economic challenges.
